Baby Beach Clean Beach Initiative Project [Contact – Richard Haimann 714-834-4786]

PROJECT:  The project is to mitigate bacteriological contamination and postings at Baby Beach.  The source of bacteria is elusive at this beach.  Numerous BMPs have been attempted but to no avail.  In this project, three studies will be completed in order to identify the source of bacteria and select appropriate BMPs to mitigate those bacteria: a data mining and evaluation study that includes GIS, a bacteriological source tracking study, and a tidal circulation study.  Following the studies, BMPs will be selected, designed, implemented and monitored.  Additionally, the Ocean Institute adjacent to Baby Beach has recently initiated a renovation in which stormwater BMPs will be incorporated as part of the renovation.  The installation and monitoring of these BMPs is also a part of this project because of their positive impact on water quality at Baby Beach.

State of the Beach report and data analysis is ongoing.  Draft State of the Beach report still on schedule for early January.

12/16/02

State of the Beach report and analysis of data is ongoing.  Data Mining report final edits completed for inclusion in State of the Beach report.  Draft State of the Beach report still on schedule for early January.

12/13/02

Contract summary form, first quarterly progress report, and first grant disbursement request sent to SWRCB for next-day delivery.

12/11/02

Analysis of data is ongoing.  The draft State of the Beach report will be completed in early January.  The team has found bacteria in sediment samples with higher concentrations found in finer grained sediments.  This raises questions regarding regrowth and resuspension of bacteria resident in sediments.

12/13/02

Disbursement request, quarterly progress report, and several deliverables sent to SWRCB for period through September 30, 2002.

12/5/02

First draft of Ocean Institute BMP monitoring plan completed.  Monitoring to be planned for current rain season.

12/2/02

Soils grain size analysis results received.  Team continues analyzing data and preparing State of the Beach Report.

11/25/02

After reviewing validation results from laboratories that perform Microbial Source Tracking (MST) studies such as those used in the San Juan Creek Watershed study, it was concluded that results obtained from these methods would still be rather uncertain.  It was decided to use data collected to date, which is extensive, to prepare the State of the Beach Report, select BMPs and identify further studies that would help reduce bacterial contamination at Baby Beach.
